E17 freezing on start

Hi, I'm new to Arch but not new to Linux. I've just installed Arch following the beginner's guide on the wiki, excepting that I opted for OSS instead of ALSA and E17 as my DE. I should have everything for Enlightenment set up; I followed the E17 guide on the wiki. However, when I start up and it gets to Entrance, it freezes on the login screen. That is to say, it displays the login screen, but immediately freezes (system completely locks up) before it is possible to do anything.

I suppose I could probably use another login manager, but it'd be nice to get Entrance working instead.

Re: E17 freezing on start

Welcome to the forum, argonic!

Is your hal daemon running ? Is there any related information in the log files? (errorlog, xorglog, syslog)
Which kernel/driver/X do you use ?

Re: E17 freezing on start

Hmm, I'm not sure that hal ran. I don't know how else to tell, but there are no files in /etc/hal.d, only folders.

Errorlog doesn't have anything relevant, syslog just shows the times I've tried booting it missing a proper termination since I had to hard-shutdown. Xorglog stops at "initializing extension glx", which could be the problem because before that nvidia's glx had been loaded. On installing the nvidia drivers it said it removed the open-source glx drivers, but if it didn't could that be the problem?

I think my kernel is 2.6.26, I'm not entirely sure how to check.

Re: E17 freezing on start

Okay, I tried logging in on the console and then doing startx, but Enlightenment froze at a language selection screen, so this might be more an E17 problem rather than just Entrance.

Re: E17 freezing on start

Does your X work fine if not running Enlightement? For example if you just have exec xterm in your .xinitrc , does it start up without freezing? For hal, maybe just start it beforehand to be sure: /etc/rc.d/hal start . And for your kernel version just do uname -a .

Re: E17 freezing on start

What about your xorg.conf ? How did you generate it ? Manually, with hwd, with X -configure or porting a working one from other distribution  By the way did you try it with other WM ? 2.6.26 ? Could you press a pacman -Syyu ?

you can tell which daemons are running by

ls /var/run/daemons

if hal is not listed, it is recommended you start it.

Re: E17 freezing on start

Okay, so:
-My kernel is 2.6.30
-My xorg.conf was generated with nvidia-xconfig
-HAL wasn't running
-xterm freezes with or without HAL

So I'm guessing this is more an issue with X.

Re: E17 freezing on start

Yeah, so at this point I would say to go through the Nvidia and Xorg wiki articles to see if any of the advice in there get your X up and running.

Re: E17 freezing on start

Those seem pretty comprehensive, but nothing I found in either of them helped.

I almost think this is just X not reading my mouse and keyboard, because when Enlightenment comes up I can see things pop up as they load, I just can't move my mouse while it's happening. However, once it's loaded, it won't even respond to pressing the power button on my computer. It should at least respond to that, right?

Anyway, I'm thinking maybe I'll un/reinstall Xorg, or maybe do a whole reinstallation of Arch.

Re: E17 freezing on start

Does X work with the opensource nv driver or vesa? Maybe install one of those, backup your xorg.conf and run X -configure to generate a new config.

Re: E17 freezing on start

I'm sorry I've mistake the threads:(

hi
I've got exactly the same problem
my system freezes after a while sometimes it recovers or sometimes not

mine is an asus eee with an intel graphic card
I don't know if is a xorg problem but seems to be
I've checked the logs and nothing found.

In ubuntu works so it's not a hardware issue. could be the intel drivers or something

I'll try with vesa drivers and see what happens
