X won't start

correct me if i'm posting in the wrong section.

so for no real reason today (i haven't run any updates today and i've done a few reboots) x just refuses to start for me. i've got openbox running through ck in my xinit but when i run startx i end up getting my background and panel, but i have no mouse or keyboard at that point.

upon further investigation, it seems that HAL refuses to start (sudo /etc/rc.d/hal restart gives me a FAIL for both starting and stopping and it won't tell me why)

xorg.0.log is empty, and frankly it's bothering me. the last thing i can think of that i did was do some modifying in my sudoers file (but i've since undone those changes to see if that changes anything)

oh, and i'm running xf86-video-intel, if that makes a difference

Re: X won't start

wow. okay. that is fixed. thanks so much knute.

i assumed restarting HAL was enough to restart dbus, but that didn't give me any dbus errors.

i had to delete the old pid file - i guess it got shutdown wrong.

thanks for the little tip. i feel like an idiot.

LOL

Don't worry about it.   That tip was learned the hard way myself.  smile
