I've just installed Archlinux with lates xorg from repo, with xf86-video-intel, -input-mouse, -input-keyboard.
First thing i've tried was using HAL. Didn't work, it seems it tries to run X, but it can't The screen is black for a moment a then returns to console.
Here is log: http://dpaste.com/117386/
Then i tried X --configure and X -config xorg.conf.new. Also did not work, the screen turns to black and hang...
Finally I used hwd -x, same problem as with X --configure...
What is going on ? I've never had any problems with X on arch, till now...
I have a Intel 945GM graphics controller.
EDIT:
I added vga=866 to kernel line in grub/menu.lst because starting X cause error "/dev/fd0 no such file "

That doesn't sound right: hal shouldn't try to start X. What are the indications that it did?

I meant, after starting HAL, and executing startx sth is happening, but it immediately back to console...

Pick one of those. Everything else (e.g. 866) is unreliable.
You Xorg log file looks surprisingly normal, as if X went down regularly. What is in you .xinitrc file?

i've followed these instructions http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRU … Resolution. But i can change, no problem.
my .xinitrc is clear
EDIT:
funny, I added "exec xterm" to .xinitrc and it works !!! mouse, keybord are fine. What is going on ?

What is going on is that X will start, then the commands in .xinitrc will be executed, and when that is done X will shut down. So in case of an empty xinitrc X will start up and then immediately shut down.
exec xterm starts an xterm and then waits for it to finish (i.e. be closed).
Everything you have described here is consistent with a successful installation.

Be careful with kernel mode setting and vga= settings. It works not too good together. See wiki article on Intel cards (but its the same with other cards):

I remeber that afret installing X11, i had 3 xterm, and clock on screen, not immediate shutdown.
Whatever, gnome works
