a few versions back (don't know which one. i never keep track), when i'd click in the url bar, the whole address would be selected/highlighted and i could just begin typing my next search/address. whatever version i'm using now doesn't do that. now, i have to highlight it myself, or right-click and select 'clear'. can any of you all point me in the right direction for getting this the way i want? (i've looked at all the config files and couldn't find anything obvious to an end user like me.)

Yeah I liked that as well, not sure if single click will be re-enabled , Ctrl+L does do the same thing however.

alt+d exists in firefox and IE. You can also use ctrl+k (as in firefox) to search. It wipes out the entire URL bar and replaces it with a ?

B.t.w. with Firefox you can change this behaviour of the urlbar with
browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll true
in about:config .

Firefox by default has doubleClickSelectsAll set to true. So I always use that if I am moving away from the page and a single click, if I need to simply modify the existing url.
I tried double click in chromium, but that only selects the immediate word that your cursor is on. :-(
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

For Chromium, the following link popped up at the bottom of my 'New Tab' page yesterday: http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bi … 43&ctx=tip
