After kernel and xorg upgrade, xorg crashes at login

I have tried to disable KMS, and tried further to disable Compiz, to no avail. Every time I log into Xorg, I either get a black screen with nothing showing (I can move the cursor, though), or sometimes I can see the wallpaper. When I do see the wallpaper, however, Xorg eventually freezes. When I do not see the wallpaper, nothing happens.

Anyway, if you need any more information, tell me, I'll tell it.

I've had problems getting xorg to work that sound similar to yours.  My problem, I believe, had to do with keyboard/mouse issues.  I see that you have all three of the following installed:

          xf86-input-evdev
          xf86-input-keyboard
          xf86-input-mouse

This could be your problem, as I believe xf86-input-evdev conflicts somewhat with the other two.  See part III of the Beginner's Guide

You have to scroll down a bit to see where it talks about configuring your input devices.

I use xf86-input-evdev only.  Note HAL must be running before the X server begins so you need to have it in your daemons line of your /etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS( ... hal ... )

Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?
Can you post anything interesting from /var/log/everything.log posted around the time that xorg crashed?

I just uninstalled xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard. I had already configured my input devices to work with xf86-input-evdev.

The login process went a little further than usual (gnome-panel loaded) but then Xorg crashed and I was forced back to GDM.

I finally isolated the problem. I created a dummy account with nothing running at login. I could log in, but when I tried to run Compiz Fusion, BANG! I guess I had a mix of problems with xf86-input-* and Compiz.

I'm back to my own account, but with Compiz Fusion disabled. That's kinda annoying, though. Is there a quick fix for this? Like reverting back to the old kernel?

Anyway, thanks for your time!

Yeah, I could see that Compiz was going "Tango-Uniform" from everything.log. Unfortunately, I've no experience with ATI issues. Sorry.
