No response in UI until I move the mouse

Hi, I have a strange problem. Sometimes when I press a button in the UI or click a link in any of my web browsers nothing happens until I move the mouse.

Sometimes I can wait (with the mouse completely still) for more than 30 seconds without anything happening until I move the mouse.
I'm using gnome.
This started to happen maybe a month ago when I did a full upgrade.

The most obvious place where this happens is at the login windows of gdm, if I click the cancel button (press the left mouse button and release) nothing will happen until I move the mouse, I can wait there forever.

I'm using 64 bit arch and nvidia graphics driver. It seems to me like the mouse release event is somehow suppressed until a mouse move event is triggered.

I do not know if this is related but most of the times when I click the back button of chromium it remains shaded even after I have release the mouse button, and whenever i hover the button it becomes shaded again like I was constantly pressing down the left mouse button. This problem occurs with both compiz and metacity.

Any ideas?
