[SOLVED] Paman update screwed up system - again!

Hi,

I really wonder what\s going on in Arch Linux world. Since month, every once in a while I make an update I got kicked out of a normal working system. First initcpio doesnt work correctly and my LVM isn\t initialised, then systemd got introduced and network is down, now, whatever happened>
KDE seems to be completely gone> no taskbar, unknown widget, etc.
Dolphin cant open any folder, just says invalid protocol

And best part, Internet doesnt give any usefull reply. Idk what the problem is, but please, can anyone help???

Andre

PS> Also my Keyboard is set back to US, for whatever reason...

There could be about a thousand things that might have gone wrong, that vast majority of which would be caused by you not acting in some situation.
Make sure your systemd is up to date, you might want to check the news too and check for pacnew and pacsave files for starters.

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Not a pacman or package issue. Moving to Newbie Corner...

There have been some major changes to the lvm2 package, did you read the notification pacman gave you about them when you updated?

I think the lvm2 version with the major changes is still in Testing.

danan, if you really want help with your system, leave out the "what's going on in Arch world" nonsense, and calmly describe your issues in detail. I have not experienced any of the difficulties you mention, and I use Arch testing.

If, on the other hand, you want to rant about what's going on in Arch world, how pacman screwed your system, etc - get a blog and leave us alone.

Re: [SOLVED] Paman update screwed up system - again!

Hi,

I'm sorry for my explosion, it's just weird, that I have more trouble in the last 4month than in the 3 years before.
-Systemd is uptodate, since it happens after a full system update.
-LVM was an old problem which was more or less simple to fix (still afraid every linux update that the hook gets wrong "hooked', but can live with that)
-I will check for pacnew files, but usually I did everything pacman suggested
-can anyone give input on the dolphin error - doesn't seem like a module or other systemd related problem (which is the closest big problem I had)

I really appreciate any help, which is one of the biggest pluses in Arch!

/Andre

The keyboard layout is back probably because you edited "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf" (which gets updated if you use "--force" or anything like that), instead of creating a "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-something.conf" file, like the wiki says to.

But to address the main issue, you updated the system without reading pacman's output, which clearly told you what to do (what to add as a kernel parameter when systemd became the default). Have you read the front page news (https://www.archlinux.org/) about consolekit? How do you start your session? With startx or with a login manager? Post your ~/.xinitrc.

I have made a personal commitment not to reply in topics that start with a lowercase letter. Proper grammar and punctuation is a sign of respect, and if you do not show any, you will NOT receive any help (at least not from me).

Re: [SOLVED] Paman update screwed up system - again!

Hum, well, what I would do... did do... was with all these major changes to Arch. I did a clean install. If there really are a large number of problems, it may take less time to make a backup and start clean then to fix all the problems.

If you have LVM... do you have enough room to shrink the logical volumes and make new logical volumes for a clean install instead of backing up? Anyway, this is the script I use to backup..

Re: [SOLVED] Paman update screwed up system - again!

The problem with reinstalling is you do not learn what you mistakes are. There are plenty of us using Arch with none of the problems you've described. If you are commited to using Arch, it's probably better in the long run to figure out what you have done incorrectly so you don't repeat the mistakes.
