[Solved] Printing (plug-and-sort-of-play)

I run Arch on one machine and also have a laptop running Mint, I need to be able to use printers on a pretty-much plug and play basis without an internet connection present - hence Mint on the laptop.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I could set something up on Arch which works like the easy-use production GNU/Linux distros, i.e. it detects new printers and adds them to cups?

Or if anyone has a possible solution which is different from this but has a similar result I'd be glad to give it a try...

Thanks.

Re: [Solved] Printing (plug-and-sort-of-play)

I was dreading setting up CUPS on Arch but to be honest it was pretty painless and the web interface did a remarkable job of setting up the printer after a couple clicks. Have you already installed CUPS as per the wiki? My rough install script for CUPS looks like this (just following the wiki, really). If you have, the following will be irrelevant, but perhaps someone else will use it.

pacman -S libcups cups cups-filters ghostscript gsfonts gutenprint hplip cups-pdf foomatic-db foomatic-db-engine foomatic-db-nonfree foomatic-filters python2-dbus sane python2-imaging python2-notify rpcbind python2-pyqt python2-gobject2 libusbx pycups system-config-printer-common system-config-printer-gnome

# other drivers that you might want to install for offline availability
# splix
# samsung-unified-driver
# ufr2 cndrvcups-lb

I have a couple guis in that list I think, but I haven't touched them. The web UI ( http://localhost:631 ) is fine so far.

That was very helpful, thank you.

That seems to be pretty much the kind of set-up I was hoping for. It seems so easy now... Whenever I've tried this before with Arch I've ended up just shouting at it...

Yeah, I only did this the other night. I went *years* without printing on Arch, no kidding, because it seemed so black box. I was surprised how easy it turned out to be. I actually only did it because chromium kept crashing on print preview without CUPS installed, but now I print all the time.
