[SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

Hi, I read the dvd wiki and a lot of post but I couldn't find what's wrong...

So I installed all dvd pluggins : good, ugly, bad, complete...and I'm using vlc. I set vlc like in the wiki : cp the .desktop and mime.
My dvd drive is sr0.

So here I am, I insert a dvd in my computer and I go in file manager and click the DVD under devices. I see 2 folders : AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS both with a lock on it.
AUDIO_TS is empty and all files in VIDEO_TS have locks on them.

When I click on one file and do "open with vlc", I get an error saying vlc can't read the files.

help please

Re: [SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

Vlc doesn't read "files" it reads the dvd device.  I don't know how that works in a gui, but I suspect the dvd icon itself, not the subfolders/files would be what needs to be opened in vlc.

I'm also not sure if vlc can play mounted devices - I don't think mplayer will.

For an example, if when I put in a dvd I just use the command:

mplayer dvd://

There is no need to have the dvd mounted as the "dvd://" command line parameter directs mplayer to read from /dev/sr0 (actually /dev/sr1 in my case, but that's from my user configuration).

Re: [SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

Have you tried opening VLC first and starting the DVD from the File menu?

Re: [SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

If all the needed libs are installed, libdvdcss, libdvdnav, libdvdread, VLC plays the whole DVD by right clicking on the dir VIDEO_TS, menus and all. Of course Nautilus/Thunar/whatever must be setup with an actionscript.

Addendum: libdvdcss: is only an optional dependency to VLC.

Re: [SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

yes I tried opening vlc first, didn't work. I have reinstalled all the libs.

error in gui  after typing vlc dvd://  :
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc "/dev/dvd".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://'. Check the log for details. (I don't know where is the log file)

anyone using vlc and working here? maybe the lock on the files has something to do with it..I tested it with a tv-series dvd.

Re: [SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

Are you sure the device is /dev/dvd? Look in the file /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info for the name of your DVD device. For me it's /dev/sr1.

Re: [SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

So now that you know the name, have you tried getting VLC to use /dev/sr0?

It's just my personal opinion - SMPlayer is great... I never liked VLC - the solution that I have posted MAY fix the dvd playback for vlc as well.

Re: [SOLVED] How to watch a dvd

If you use Gnome/KDE/Xfce, they probably have a way to start programs in media insert. Otherwise you could try writing a udev rule for it:
