Strange behavior after suspend.

Hi,
For some time I have a strange behavior of my system after I awake my computer(after suspend). This problem don't disappear after update.
Ok, so if I suspend my computer, and awake him I can't run any program. Even if i was open some application, this application crashes. I have to restart my machine.
Somebody had similar problem or know how help?

I'm using Arch Linux x64, kernel 3.8, openbox. Suspend by "systemctl suspend".

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

Did you check the journal for info?

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

In order to know how to use it feel free to take a look at the related wiki entry.

Do you know approximately the date when this started to happen? If so, a look at the pacman log might give further info on the packages that you updated/installed around that date.

I do not know if this might be a reliable source to gather further information, in addition to what you may find in the journal, but you can try to start a program of your choice, f.e. your text editor (leafpad etc.) with the following debug method (leafpad used as example)

LD_DEBUG=files leafpad > leafpad.log 2>&1

Once the program is open suspend and resume. Even if the program may crash with the rest of your setup after the restart you should find the log file in your home folder.

Paste its content here (remember to use the code BBCode) as it might offer clues to someone else of what may have gone wrong.

As an alternative/additional step, after resuming from suspend, before you do anything switch to a terminal, f.e. tty1 and log in. Now try to start an application in X (openbox) even if it crashes it does not matter as you should still be able to switch to the terminal and check out the journal in order to see what it tells you with regard to what just happened.
That may also provide useful information once you know how to handle the journal.

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

Not interesting lines in journal.

But, after resuming from suspend and switching to tty1 everything works fine(startx, apps start fine, etc).
Reason must be another(but where?)

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

I have the exact same problem, using KDE, selecting any of the items in the kde menu does nothing, but only after a reboot, will try to post all the stuff that installed since I came back from vacation ( that's when the problem started ) I suspected 3.8 Linux, but downgrading back to 3.7 didn't seem to solve it.

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

Nope. Most result say: "run xhost +" or something similar, but after that I encounter new trouble:

No protocol specified
xhost: unable to open display ":0"

So i searching again and most result is something similar to "DISPLAY=":0.0" export DISPLAY" but it not working for me too.

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

I have a solution, or at least a solution to my issue

When I start my computer, the hostname is set as localhost (per my expectations) when I suspend and resume however the name gets changed to localhost.localdomain this appears to be causing the issue, when I change the hostname back to localhost all is again well with the world (until I next suspend and resume) at which point it goes back to localhost.localdomain and again stops working.

Of course, it also doesn't help that sometimes after resume it doesn't ask for a password and just freezes my system completely, I can get to another TTY, however can't get back into the graphical one and have to force a reboot, haven't yet tracked that one down.

So, see what your hostname is set to before/after a suspend.

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

I had the same issue https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159573, it would be nice if there were some warning or something if you accidentally run without a hostname set.

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

Not quite the same, since in our instance (I believe) the hostname changes after resume, where in yours you just hadn't set the hostname.

Re: Strange behavior after suspend.

To complete out (and maybe the lack of hostname in frampy's case was more similar than I had realized) changing my hostname to something other than localhost seems to have resolved the issue complete, changed my name to archlaptop, suspending and resuming seems to leave it alone.
