Hello everybody!
This is probably a real newbish question but I don't find any solution for that:
After about 20 minutes of inactivity my monitor blanks my screen and shuts down.
Yes, it wakes up after pressing a key but I want to disable this behaviour for a number of reasons.
This happens in KDE, on a tty terminal, even when watching a youtube video.
I already tried (as I read in an old thread):
- xset -dpms (this gives an error: unable to open display 0)
- I disabled all KDE screensaving methods (as far as I know ...)
- there is no more sysinit.rc to edit - it's all systemd now ...
- editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf doesn't work either - this file doesn't exist anymore
Does anyone know how to do it?
thx for reading,
piedro

Search for "dpms off". You can create a xorg.conf, but monitor related settings are normally done in the 10-monitor.conf file now.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I have
xset -dpms
xset s off
in my .xinitrc and use startx instead of a display manager. Issuing those commands in a terminal also works (when I run vlc those commands get reversed.) You should investigate why you get the error "unable to open display 0)" if you are issuing the command inside X.

unable to open display 0
Check your hostname.

Have you played with System Settings > Power Management and System Settings > Display and Monitor > Screen Locker?

[...] Alternatively you can disable console blanking permanently using the following command:
# echo -ne "\033[9;0]" >> /etc/issue

@Inxsible : thx for your answer, but I don't have the file "10-monitor.conf", I tried to find it systemwide but it seems not to be there ...
@stryder & @brebs : my hostname is set, but I found that when i type these commands into a KDE Konsole windows it works! Before I used yakuake which obviously works somehow different .... and I'd rather prefer not to use the startx command but if everything else fails i will do this ...
@lucke : yeah, it's all disabled and these settings shouldn't affect the tty-ssessions that i access when pressing CTRL+ALT+1,2,3,...
@rix : that looks cryptic but I read the article and will try ...
Now I have to wait for a while (which i can't do right now) and see if one of the remedies worked :-)
I'll let you know ... thx everybody!

You can always create one.
It lies under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Weel - after some testing it works now ... I just don't know exact what did it: I used the commans (thx stryder!) and the cryptic ones (thx rix!) and it seems not to blank any more at all!
That's great, so thx everyone and :SOLVED :-)

I am not at my system right now, but I would recommend you to use the build-in power manager coming with KDE. You should find it under system settings. That way you don't need to do stuff the shell, as you are on a DE anyhow.
Furthermore, have a look at caffeine for your YouTube problem. It's in the AUR.
