Confused about KMS with hybrid graphics

I have been troubleshooting a few issues with my laptop and have gone very far down the rabbit hole. I am at the point now where I am concerned that I may not have KMS setup properly for my hybrid graphics (Intel/ATI). I have been booting with the kernel parameter "radeon.modeset=1" and blacklisting the intel i915 driver at boot. Is this the correct configuration? Should it be reversed and have i915.modeset=1 and blacklist the radeon driver? Does it matter?

thanks
