LightDM suddenly broke after uninstalling a window manager

I've been using LightDM with XFCE fine for months. I just installed the i3 window manager to try it out. I didn't like it, so I uninstalled it. All of the sudden, LightDM no longer works. When it starts, I see just a black screen with a black cursor. The screen flashes once, then comes back with the same black screen/cursor. If I switch to a TTY, I see that systemd-journal is using 100% CPU. I have no idea what went wrong.

I also tried using SLiM. It doesn't freeze like LightDM, but when I try to login, it says "failed to execute login command."

I tried reinstalling LightDM but that didn't make a difference. I know this is really little information, but does anyone know what I can do to fix it?

Re: LightDM suddenly broke after uninstalling a window manager

So, you uninstall whatever is being called by the DM when you log in and then wonder, why you cannot log in anymore? For syslinux, you must have changed the config to point to i3 instead of xfce. For lightdm, have a look at the config file, it must also point somewhere.

Re: LightDM suddenly broke after uninstalling a window manager

Awebb, your post makes no sense whatsoever. LightDM reads /usr/share/xsessions/, it doesn't just blindly run a script like SLiM. And what in the world does syslinux have to do with anything?

corban post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Looks like the greeter is repeatedly exiting, but I don't know how to diagnose the problem. Thanks for the help.

Re: LightDM suddenly broke after uninstalling a window manager

It refers to /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log, it's worth taking a look at. Of course, you could always reinstall the greeter or try a different greeter.

Like I said, SLiM doesn't work either, so I think it's not a problem with the greeter. Anyhow, I already tried reinstalling the greeter and it made no difference.

That log file you mentioned said

** (process:573): WARNING **: Failed to open CK session: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit was not provided by any .service files

** (lightdm-gtk-greeter:575): WARNING **: Failed to open sessions directory: Error opening directory '/usr/share/lightdm/remote-sessions': No such file or directory

Re: LightDM suddenly broke after uninstalling a window manager

Hi,
have the same symptoms after the system has frozen to open a /mnt
not sure why (unavailable net share was mounted under /mnt/smth, but I was just accessing /mnt.. who knows)
The system wouldn't restart (via shutdown -r), so had to force..
Upon startup - black window after lightdm login.
The greeter log is very similar - CK warning and some criticals

(lightdm-gtk-greeter:644): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_get_type: assertion `value != NULL' failed

(lightdm-gtk-greeter:644): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_type_is_subtype_of: assertion `g_variant_type_check (type)' failed

(lightdm-gtk-greeter:644): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_get_type_string: assertion `value != NULL' failed

Using awesome wm. Had to create .xsession and run manually startx - this works.

Had this happen to me, just make sure you have a greeter installed and setup with lightdm, check the lightdm wiki
