Sound dissapears

Generally speaking I have no sound in my Lenovo T410 anymore. Randomly it appears( e.x. after restart most of time) for random time ( can be 10 sec up to 10 minutes).
Alsa mixer checked - no muted devices. Please help to resolv this problem.

PS. There is no problem with headphones

Re: Sound dissapears

hi kriipi
If using alsa and you are also using another audio device ie. USB headset/webcam  then the USB device is most probably grabbing slot0, which you want your soundcard to be in, im not sure what chipset your soundcard is, mine is intel, and on creating this fille /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf  put this 1 line in the alsa-base.conf file and it will ensure your intel soundcard gets slot0.  create a file in /etc/modprobe.d named alsa-base.conf , in it put this 1 line (if intel audio) if your soundcard is not intel report back and i will modify this 1 line

options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-usb-audio

after creating the alsa-base.conf file reboot and your sound should be back up.

Re: Sound dissapears

Try installing/running pavucontrol opposed to alsamixer, check the settings/output config therein. My previous comment regarding alsa-base.conf is unapplicable as you are using pulseaudio.

I have already pavucontrol installed.

I would like to ask for one thing - it is possible for pulse create something similar like the one for alsa? I use alsa with created alsa-base.conf in /etc/modprobe.d because i have 4 sound devices. With this we can choose default sound card (in my case it is ctxfi_snd index=0 and the others are index = -2) but i have also installed pulseaudio (with created disable_pulse.sh for it in order to control sound trogh alsa) but i would like to know if it is possible to choose defautl sound card when there is only pulseaudio. Pavucontrol has something to choose and set up in gui but it didn't work for me. Sound dissapeared randomly even when there was choosed default device, so that is why i would like to try and create config file.

Re: Sound dissapears

Good luck OP, i was merely guessing as you have not provided much information, for future reference heres an excerpt from the arch wiki RE: forum Etiquette: When asking questions, provide as much information as possible, including error messages, terminal output, logs, what you have previously tried, what documentation and searches you have attempted, and related configuration files. Read it in its entirity here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Forum_etiquette .  @ firekage im not aware of such a thing but i rarely use pulseaudio and rely on alsa with an alsa-base.conf, however i am sure what your looking for exists, this is linux after all, arch linux at that.

Re: Sound dissapears

Hda compliant hardware usually have power saving options. Settings power_save to zero in /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa.conf might help.

Re: Sound dissapears

Use [_code_][_/code_] tags without the underscores. Why do you use slots and index? You only need one, I recommend using index, so the first line is unnecessary. Are vid and pid correct for your hardware? Is it a Ibex Peak High Definition Audio? Please post (each in seperate code tags):

lspci -nn | grep -i audio
amixer -c 0
amixer -c 1
systool -v -m snd_hda_intel

Since you use pulseaudio, check if suspend on idle is active and deactivate if necessary.

Re: Sound dissapears

Yes, that is fine. you could have just edited previous posts. Much easier to read, right?

The power_save_controller parameter for snd_hda_intel is set to 1, so adding power_save_controller=0 to the line in modprobe options, could be one lead.

options snd_hda_intel index=0 vid=8086 pid=3b56 power_save=0 power_save_controller=0 snoop=0

Check that suspend-on-idle module for pulseaudio, maybe it has changed recently, I would not know.

I changed the line in alsa-base.conf.

Also "disabled suspend-on -idle" in /etc/pulse/default.pa.

Nothing. Situation is the same. Sometimes there is sound sometimes not. In case on there is, the period of sound works differs. Maybe 30 seconds, maybe 3 minutes. I dont know anymore. Quite tired about this sound problem.

Re: Sound dissapears

Provide dmesg just after the sound stops. Does alsa init help?

alsactl init

Did you reboot after changing pulseaudio configuration or at least restarted pa? I would kill pulseaudio and see how long audio works, you can try running speaker-test. If the sounds stays intact, then there is probably something wrong with pulseaudio.

Yes, I rebooted. After reboot no sound from speakers. Started clementine. No sound. Then inserted headphone. Sound from headphone. Then ejected headphones, sound appears also from laptop speakers. Sound stays about 1 min, then dissapears again.
Dmesg(last line)  after sound dissapeared:

[ 131.183543] perf interrupt took too long (2511 > 2495), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50100

Re: Sound dissapears

You did not specify if pulseaudio was running, I would like to rule that aspect out. Now that you mention it, maybe turning jack detection would help. Is there anything else in dmesg that might be of interest considering the whole log? That perf message is perplexing.
