[Solved] Programs don't open on screen on openbox

I just reinstalled arch on my machine openbox is almost clean slate still other than having obmenu-generator installed and setup per the wiki's example. Since I have an gtx 960 gpu I've installed the nvidia, -libgl, enabled multi-lib and setup xinit. Openbox & xserver open cleanly but once in openobx the only thing I see is when I open the openbox menu with my mouse, chromium, xterm, even errors for menu options for programs I don't have installed are not visible.

At first I tried with no xorg.conf, then I tried using one from nvidia-xconfig. No difference. I'll edit this later with some logs from openbox.

Re: [Solved] Programs don't open on screen on openbox

Sounds like you haven't got the menu set up properly in Openbox. It has default programs in it, and if they aren't replaced with actual software on your system, the entries will be there.

Also, it sounds like you expected to see something else when you started Openbox rather than just a blank screen. What did you expect to see? That is the way Openbox starts -- nothing displayed. You have to configure it how you want it.

Re: [Solved] Programs don't open on screen on openbox

Yes but I do have it setup some what, as chrome, xterm, urxvt are in the menu under their correct categories. Internet>chromium, System>urxvt, xterm but on my monitor nothing happens when I open them and I see no errors in my Xorg.0.log(s).

In chormium's case, when it opened it was on the far right of my screen but not visible on my monitor, I bindly clicked and dragged it into view. It would still show the right edge like it was there and stick/snap to it but dragging it past the edge doesn't bring up the next workspace, it just keeps going even though I can't see it.

One of these will solve your problem, most handy for multi monitor setups, they let you define persistent x&y for any given window, having only used obapps, you will need xprop for it.

Re: [Solved] Programs don't open on screen on openbox

Turns out it was my setup causing the issue I think, since I'm using a vga dell monitor with an vga to hdmi cable nvida/xorg though I had two displays connected and made the false one the default monitor hmm.

So when I was running openbox from xinit/startx xorg was using crt-0 to show everything, and it even had the two connected since openbox was treating them both as one workspace. This was one of the weirder issues I've had on arch..
Thank you mrunion, cirrus for trying to help when I wasn't sure what the issue even was.
