msmtp usereval or similar

I'm setting up mutt with offlineimap and msmtp.

I'm hoping to keep my usernames/email addresses (and passwords of course) out of the config files and my dotfiles repo. Passwords are easy.

In my offlineimaprc I used the option

remoteusereval

to get the username from an external file. However I can't find an analogous option for msmtp in the wiki or man page or sample msmtprc. I've tried evaluating a bash command and an environment variable, but as far as I can tell msmtp doesn't do any interesting parsing.

I'd be open to using something else instead of msmtp if all else fails...

msmtp reads from .netrc or an encrypted file; see the auth entry in the man page...

#edit: reread, you are wanting to source the username as well. That may not be possible with msmtp

Yes, that's the problem...

by the way, I'm planning to adapt your guide to encrypting mutt - thanks for the writeup!
