allow volume and brightness control while screen locked

Is there a way to allow certain shortcuts to function even while the screen is locked?
On Windows I was able to control the brightness and volume even before I unlocked the screen. Is this possible on Linux?
I use i3lock as a screen lock and as far as I know there's no setting to allow this.
Is there any screen lock on linux that allows the control of the screen brightness and volume?
Or is there another way to achieve this?

Why Linux? Because it doesn't hide anything from you. It puts you so closely in control of your machine that you can feel its heartbeat.

Yes, don't rely on Xorg shortcuts to do what you want. You can use e.g acpid or illum
