Steam (WINE) kills all sound

Hey,

I just installed Steam with Wine and I'm experiencing a really strange problem. When Steam is running, I can't hear any sounds in my system, no matter if they are from a steam game or a random audio file on the system. As soon as I kill the steam process, all sound immidiately goes back on.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Logs? Journal? Details of your sound setup? Any attempt at debugging yourself?

How did you install steam? PlayOnLinux? What version of wine? Need a lot more info as Jason pointed out.

Sorry, I'm trying here, it's just really hard to know what to do. I wanna make everything work but I feel lost and frustrated.

The problem has now reached a point where the sound doesn't go back on after terminating steam. I rebooted and still have no sound. I tried changing the default sound card in /etc/asound.conf but it didn't help, so I changed it back to:

GNU nano 2.4.2            File: /etc/asound.conf

pcm.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
  hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
  }
}

ctl.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
}

My output of aplay -l:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

The only sound audible is the sound test in winecfg. Everything else is dead silent. I made sure no channels in alsamixer are muted. When I launch alsamixer, by default it chooses Pulseaudio, with only one master channel and nothing else.

Re: Steam (WINE) kills all sound

Set your winecfg to use the system default for all cards/soundsources (the option literally says systemdefault, not a specific card) is all I can say with as little info as you provided, we can't read your computer's setup you have to help us out here. What you provided here is a start, but not enough, please provide everything that has been asked so far

Ok so my winecfg has all paremeters under the audio tab set to (System Default). Yesterday I got sound through other applications while steam was running by changing the port in pavucontrol. The problem is now I can't even get steam launched, for which I have another thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1546923. Pardon the confusion, but these two problems are intervening with each other.

Re: Steam (WINE) kills all sound

Without any special configuration (pulseaudio + alsa) you can just install pavucontrol and use the GUI to mute (with the mute buttons) steam in 'playback' AND 'recording' tabs. It frees the device for other applications.
Launch Steam -> Launch pavucontrol -> Mute all the Steam things -> You can even close pavucontrol after that.
Obviously, you need to do it every time you launch steam hmm
This is the only way for me to play any wine+steam games.
