Trouble setting up iBus IME
So I've added the Japanese input method to iBus, and generated my locale-gen, but under region and language I'm not finding the iBus IME. Additionally applications seem to be having trouble displaying Japanese as I just get a bunch of boxes where there should be characters.

Personally, I prefer fcitx. I have a page, with links to the wiki, that covers setting up fcitx-mozc (though one can also use kkc) at http://srobb.net/jpninpt.html#Arch
Pretty much works out of the box for me. If you're using Gnome, there may be some other things necessary, again, mentioned in the wiki entry for fcitx.

In addition, I just use en_US.UTF-8 and that still enables me to input Japanese without problems

If you will always be using it, you can also start it in your .xinitrc file.

If you're using Wayland, you may be using Gnome. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but if that's the case, follow the wiki's instructions. (Similar to what I have in the Fedora section about Gnome.) Note that they say (in the ArchWiki) that the export variables
when using Wayland should go in /etc/profile.
My only attempt on a recent Gnome with Wayland was on a Fedora VBox install, and in that case, I didn't have to add the variables, I just had to run im-switcher (not sure if it's on Arch though) and it worked. I boot into textmode then run startx if I need a GUI, which is the only way I tested it with Arch.
