New keyboard doesn't work

I bought a new keyboard and it works perfectly fine in grub and windows, but when I boot into arch it just doesn't work at all, I tried to plug it into different ports, use different wires. And when I connect the old one it works perfect, what should I do to make the new one work?

Re: New keyboard doesn't work

What kind of keyboard is it?  Am I right in assuming it connects via USB?  If so, please post the output of the following:

uname -a
pacman -Q linux

Then post the tail of `dmesg` immediately after attempting to plug the keyboard in, or alternatively run `dmesg -w` then plug the keyboard in and copy any new lines that show up in the dmesg output.

Re: New keyboard doesn't work

Yes, it is a wired USB keyboard. The old one is a 60% Reddragon Fizz and the new one is 75% Stear RX-500 Naku

❯ uname -a
Linux arch 6.9.8-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri, 05 Jul 2024 22:11:24 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux
❯ pacman -Q linux
linux 6.9.8.arch1-1

here are the latest dmesg logs:

[ 738.909841] usb 3-1: new full-speed USB device number 18 using xhci_hcd
[ 744.122477] usb 3-1: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/start: -71
[ 744.122484] usb 3-1: can't read configurations, error -71

Re: New keyboard doesn't work

There's a related thread with a similar problem for another keyboard here.  However, there the device was at least enumerated so there was a vendor and device id that could be passed to usbcore.quirks.

Given that you said it works in windows, I'd gather this is a dual boot system, right?  Please make sure that Window's fast boot is disabled:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dual_bo … ibernation

It's generally recommended to reboot twice after making that adjustment.  Don't ask me why ... I've not touched Windows in ages so I just go with what I've seen advised there.

After ensuring fastboot is disabled and after rebooting twice, if the keyboard still doesn't work, please collect the dmesg output again.

Re: New keyboard doesn't work

Yes, it is dualboot system, but fastboot has been disabled long time ago, and so dmesg output is the same:

[ 111.885635] usb 1-3: new full-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd
[ 117.292613] usb 1-3: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/start: -71
[ 117.292620] usb 1-3: can't read configurations, error -71

Edit: I just checked the info and Linux isnt listed in supported systems, I guess I've picked the wrong one... ACTUALLY, I've checked the questions and actually they say it supports.. so we gotta keep digging

Re: New keyboard doesn't work

windows "fast start" isn't the same as "fast boot" (in your UEFI) and also windows keeps re-enabling it with updates, the longer you've it disable the higher the chance it's no more.
=> check. In doubt 3rd link below and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

71 is a protocol error, do you use some power management daemon?
Does the keyboard work w/ a live distro like grml?
