Adding second display

Hi all,
I have Archinux with KDEmod 4.2 on my laptop! I want to connect an external LCD screen to my laptop's VGA output so that I can output one of my desktop instances to the laptop's LCD (as normally) and the second desktop instance to the external LCD screen.

What must I do to achieve this? (I have never done something similar so I don't know what needs to be done hmm )

Thank you in advance

Re: Adding second display

There is an option in xserver called xinerama. This is what you need. Try to search the web on this term, there is a lot of documentation about multi-headed xservers.

Re: Adding second display

Ok, I hooked it up and sort of magically it was enabled and it is now showing what my laptop screen is showing. Any tips on configuring? Also this screen is not widescreen and the entire desktop does not fit. Can anything be done about that?

I found that xinerama is being gradually abandoned in favor of XRandR but xrandr reports that it cannot find the second display. The output is the one below either I have the second screen connected or not.

$ xrandr -q
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 800

I have nVidia GeForce 8400M and I am using the proprietary drivers from nVidia.

Re: Adding second display

Then run "nvidia-setting", go to "Displays", click "autodetect" and your're done :-)
Nvidia usues it's own "multihead system" called Twinview and that's how you configure it
