Wide screen laptop connects to normal 1024X768 projector!

The are no problem to make them work together, however, only one resolution can be set.
My laptop has a resolution of 1280X800, when I set the resolution to fit laptop screen, the image shrinked on the projector, if I set it as 1024X768, projector can work ok (though still a little bit deformed), but the laptop screen image became 1024X768, either.
I googled a lot, it seems no way to set resolution for laptop and projector separately so far (even I set it as extended destop).
I am going to make a presentation wednesday, it is less possible for my to edit my xorg.conf there. Any suggestions are highly welcomed!
I am using x86_64 Arch, catalyst 8.12-3 driver.

Deepest Regards,

Re: Wide screen laptop connects to normal 1024X768 projector!

Most of the time, and this is on Windows machines we use at work, the laptop uses a resolution suited to the projector automatically. Sometimes you need to try a couple to get the best look. You end up with a non-native, slightly deformed, resolution on the laptop.

One of my co-workers uses "extend desktop" so both the laptop and screen work at their native resolutions. This works fairly well and allows you to use the laptop for notes, etc. Once again this is in windows.

It seems strange you can not do something similar in Linux. I no longer use the catalyst driver but I thought you could configure each screen independently.
