Running KDE instead of Gnome?

I have gnome installed, but I want to try out KDE 4, I tried installing kde , like in the beginners guide then commented out "exec gnome" then uncommented "exec kdestart" or whatever its called.  However gnome just decided to start, (I did comment out gdm and put kdm), so I hafe no idea whats wrong.  Also is there a fix for the over cluttered menus that have both gnome and kde items?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Running KDE instead of Gnome?

Are you using inittab to call the login manager? If so, check if everything is done right there (although the 'exec gnome' stuff doesn't look like an inittab method to me).

As for your 'cluttered' menus: there is no solution (at least no clean one).

You could add

OnlyShowIn=KDE

to all KDE application desktop files, and

OnlyShowIn=GNOME

to all Gnome application desktop files.

Re: Running KDE instead of Gnome?

If you're starting kde from kdm, you need to set kde to start in kdm. There should be a "settings" button, or something similar, and you need to choose kde from the dropdown menu

Re: Running KDE instead of Gnome?

how do i edit init tab?  I only saw editing .xinitrc , and wish there was a cleaner thing for .desktop files hmmm.  Could I remove gnome,, as in "pacman -Rs gnome" just to remove the base apps?

Re: Running KDE instead of Gnome?

I didnt think I'd have to edit this:

# Example lines for starting a login manager
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null

Re: Running KDE instead of Gnome?

check out the K Menu Gnome for the menu mess.

edit: also exists in AUR but needs to be updated to the latest version.

and yes, comment xdm, uncomment kdm and make sure you have commented run level 3 and uncommented runlevel 5 at the top of inittab.
