nvidia + new xorg + dual head

I've been having tremendous problems using dual monitor on the proprietary nvidia driver (which is the only one to work with my card it seems) and the new xorg server.
I've been trying to understand what is wrong, however, I'm not really that much further.

Symptoms:
    Pressing whatever button on my keyboard (except for shift, ctrl, etc...) for approx. more than 1 second. (instacrash pretty much, eliminates the need for ctrl+alt+backspace tongue).
    Random when changing window focus.

After trying to solve today by trying both nv and nouveau drivers (which both failed, don't really know why), I tried nvidia again, and this time, I got a decent Xorg.0.log:

Re: nvidia + new xorg + dual head

Its a problem with xinerama. Use twinview instead. Fedora already patched the problem, but I think Arch waits till its fixed upstream.

Re: nvidia + new xorg + dual head

I realise you're trying to get this to work on 2 monitors but I've found that starting with 1 monitor often will make things simpler & point out issues faster.  So please try what I suggest below.

Step 1. Can you get a single monitor set up & working with Vesa to begin with?  If yes and it doesn't crash, move to step 2.

Step 2. Install nvidia drivers from their website, not the ones in the repos perhaps?  If you've done that, do the opposite & use the repository drivers.  One of them should work, then set up a single monitor.  Do the "X test" in the beginner's guide too if you wish, as if that fails your normal Gui/DE/WM will also fail.  I found using the X test a simple & quick way to determine if my setup would work for a single monitor.

Step 2a.  It may be necessary to try this without any xorg.conf at all OR try this line after the installer has been run:

nvidia-xconfig --xconfig=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

That line above should guarantee it will place an xorg.conf in the correct directory.  If you want to see all the options pass-able to the nvidia-xconfig utility, try using:

nvidia-xconfig -A|less

There is also a readme in /usr/share/doc/NvidiaXXX/Readme.txt you might want to peruse when you have time & energy to do so.

Step 3.  If you cannot get a single monitor to work, repost with your xorg.conf file and a log if possible.

@Bestiapeluda:
But twinview sucks soo much sad (I'll try to get used to it...)

@MoonSwan:
Whut? X works you know. With dual monitor. It's just annoying to have crashes on the worst timings...

Re: nvidia + new xorg + dual head

The fix is here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69706

Start at post #14 down. It basically involves downloading two patches and placing them in a directory with a pkgbuild, Thanks Warnaud for the pkgbuild and the info on the patches!!!!!!!!

Then makepkg and pacman -U packagename to install.

The libgl dependencies listed in the pkgbuild conflict with the version that comes with the Nvidia driver. So you need to remove the 2 libGL entries from the pkgbuild. All in all, it was a simple process once I had some resources.

It basically involves dowloading the two patches and some stuff from  AUR:

yaourt -G xorg-server
wget http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpms/xorg-x11-server/devel/xserver-1.6.0-xinerama-crashes.patch?revision=1.1
wget http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpms/xorg-x11-server/devel/xserver-1.6.0-xinerama-cursors.patch

Install xorg-util-macros. Then save this PKGBUILD (I already remove the libgl dependencies) in the same directory as the patches:

then run makepkg as user then as root:

xorg-server-1.6.1-1-x86_64(or x86).pkg.tar.gz

Other than that I have been running this since the Xorg-xserver upgrade without any problems whatsoever.

BTW I run the Nvidia 180.51-1 driver. Also, my xorg.conf if needed: http://pastebin.com/f4a10f4ca

Thanks
