Hi,

Did you follow the beginners guide.  It worked for me.

Re: sound not playing

i followed the guide but i still don't hear sound... could this be because i installed gnome first instead of the audio divers like the beginners guide suggests?

Re: sound not playing

Make sure your sound card is detected.  Also, ensure you are in the audio group and all of the channels are unmuted.

No it couldn't.
Tell us what shows you alsamixer command.
You should see there volume raisers, use arrows to move with them, use <M> key to un/mute them.
If you see only a few (three or four columns), then kernel associated PC-Speaker as your main soundcard. To prevent this edit your MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf like this:

MODULES=(!pcspkr !snd_pcsp)

This should prevent kernel from using PC-Speaker.

Tell us if this helped or not.

Edit: And reboot after editing rc.conf to apply.

Re: sound not playing

I know this will sound pretty obvious, but sometimes the obvious is overlooked. Check in alsamixer to make sure that none of the playback channels are muted.  After a recent update alsamixer shows a new channel (for my card, at least) wayyyy to the right called "Speaker." If your computer (laptop) has speakers built in this needs to be unmuted. Likewise if you have speakers plugged in to the headphone jack the "Headphone" channel needs to be unmuted.

Like I said, obvious and probably something you've already checked - but it can't hurt!
