I'm installing Arch64 on a laptop with an nVidia 8600M GT GPU. I'm following the Beginner's Guide. I've done:
pacman -S xorg
pacman -S nvidia
nvidia-xconfig
But now when I try:
X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I get the nVidia logo, then the screen blanks out and NOTHING responds any more. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does not terminate the X-server. If I start xterm, xterm starts and gives me the command prompt, and then the same freeze. Anybody knows what to do?

Ok... I've solved my problems... no need to reply.

I am experiencing the same issue, how did you solve it?

Don't use a xorg.conf at all... its not needed anymore.

then where does one make configuration changes?

I did this - I started the X-server without any xorg.conf, and it fixed my freezing problems. Then, I used the 'skeleton' xorg.conf found at the wiki page for xorg. That detected my (nvidia) drivers. I didn't need anymore config changes, but I suppose you could just change xorg.conf as required. The moral is... don't start the X-server after 'auto-generating' xorg.conf.
