[SOLVED] Which keyboard layouts can be used for hotplugging?

...and more importantly, where are they stored and in which format?  If your using hal, you can choose your keyboard layout by editing:

etc/hal/fdi/policy/0-keymap.fdi

However, the keyboard layouts available, don't seem to be the ones found in:

/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/

So, where are they?  And can you write your own layout?
