Hey There,
As far as I can see GNOME on Arch has the following problems:
1) Despite the configuration of the necessary settings, GNOME seems like it doesn't get notified for lid closure. So it doesn't get suspended? (but i can suspend the system by clicking the button in shutdown preferences)
2) Monitor doesn't sleep after a while when gnome-screensaver shows up. I enable gnome-screensaver before going to sleep, and when I wake up I still found out that the monitor didn't sleep despite the configuration settings I've chosen.
Cheers!

I have same issues on my laptop, but I think it isn't related with Arch. Gnome devs are switching all power management stuff to DeviceKit, so there could be regressions.

What concernes closing the lid, you may try to intercept it in either /etc/acpi/actions/lm_lid.sh (it should be launched on a lid event) or /etc/acpi/handler.sh (it should be launched on evey acpi event) scripts. There you can call pm-suspend.
