Still looking for help with Sound

I get the opening fanfare when kde starts.
I also could hear a video that happened to be in a tab when Firefox started.
None of the sound programs (kcsd, amarok, etc) utter a peep.

Here's dialogue from a terminal:
]$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1008:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:608: audio open error: Device or resource busy

Otherwise Arch 86-64 seems.  EVEN cups started without any problem.
Don't wanna go anyplace else.

Your help very much appreciated.

Bill

Re: Still looking for help with Sound

are you using any audio daemon (pulseaudio, esd, jack etc.)? can you play the preview of the fanfare after kde has started, with no other programs running?

Could it be the problem discussed here?

Re: Still looking for help with Sound

I was was having this issue and it was mplayer failing to die after using mplayer-plugin in firefox. try installing gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer if you find a hung process.

ps -e | grep mplayer
