x11 hang the computer and monitor becomes black

Hi all !

I am a newbiwe with Arch but an old user of linux (slack, debian ..).

I am trying to configure  X11 but I can't make it work, when I run "startx" without xorg.conf file, the monitor screen becomes black and the computer does not respond further, and I have to reset it.

I read the arch wiki, hal installed and run, but I still have this problem.

I'm using the latest version of the arch, up to date with pacman.

What could be happening? Someone can give me a hint to solve this problem.

Sorry my english.

Thanks in advance.

roberto

Re: x11 hang the computer and monitor becomes black

try Xorg -configure to built a xorg.conf and try with this file.
check again that hal is running

install ssh to your box and login via a different pc (if any) to pkill X if it crashes.
reset isnt always the right solution

take a good look on http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg

finally try this (if you dont till now) pacman -Syu to upgrade your system and hopefully your xorg

Re: x11 hang the computer and monitor becomes black

Thanks ebal for your help !

> try Xorg -configure to built a xorg.conf and try with this file.

same error

> finally try this (if you dont till now) pacman -Syu to upgrade your system and hopefully your xorg

I have done and it does not solve the problem

>install ssh to your box and login via a different pc (if any) to pkill X if it crashes.

Thanks for the hint.

>take a good look on http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg

I read it but I find nothing to help me solve the problem.

Thanks again.

Re: x11 hang the computer and monitor becomes black

an old user of linux (slack, debian ..).

Great :-) Could you start xterm from your .xinitrc to check if X is working? That "black screen" may be a black cursor on a black background.

Unresponsive mouse/kdb may mean you didn't install the proper drivers.

Re: x11 hang the computer and monitor becomes black

This might be a bit far off, but try changing the drivers for your card (ie. between proprietary and open source ones if they're available), one other thing to try as a last resort is to boot your machine with the acpi=off and noacpi kernel flags, I know my Vaio laptop cannot run for longer than an hour with ACPI on as it causes random freezes as well as causing X to lock up the machine (can ssh in sometimes but X is unkillable).
