I've had 2 X server crashes, one with stepmania, one with a windows game using wine. I'm using Nvidia 8400M laptop gpu, and the official nvidia binary drivers. Here's the end of X org log:

Those games started and work, but crash after about 1-2 min of gameplay.

I have the same problem with a 6800 GT and stepmania. I'll try disabling the composite extension and see whether it helps. I'll post more information if the problem persists.

Ok, after disabling the composite extension the X.Org backtrace changed and didn't mention a thing about nvidia_drv, and when I was thrown back to tty1 I didn't see any errors from the nvidia driver. Also the sound stopped immediately after X crashing, not a few seconds later as before. I googled around a bit and found this thread which suggested running stepmania with alsa-oss emulation on (aoss stepmania). That solved the problem for me and aoss emulation didn't even affect the sync speed I'm not 100% sure whether it's necessary to disable compositing, but judging by the different crash behavior after disabling it I think it might be. I'm too lazy to test it with aoss emulation and composite extension both on, as I don't use a composition manager anyway.
Edit: It was too early to say that. I managed to play 4.5 songs before it crashed as opposed to 0.75. Now it crashes during the first song again.
