Why are many of the X11-related packages prefixed with xf86-... when Arch doesn't use XFree86 or even have it in the repositories?

My guess is because Xorg's forefather was called Xfree86.

This is probably the correct answer.
Most of the OS X api is still prefixed with NS from the NeXT days..
