Some KDEmod problems...

Hi!

I run Arch with KDEmod (Stable) on my computer. It works fine, but I have some very frustrating problems that I hope someone can help me solve.

1. When I first installed KDEmod the application launcher icon (bottom left corner) was the chakra logo. A couple of days ago, that icon suddenly became the default KDE-icon. Yesterday the KDE-icon suddenly became a "?". Where did my chakra icon go? How can I get it back? This "?"-icon is just awful!

2. I have some problems with Plasma themes. When I choose a theme in the "Desktop Settings - Plasma Workspace" menu, everything seems to work fine, but if I restart X things get ugly. The theme in the top of the Plasma Theme list always gets chosen after I restart X. So no matter what theme I choose the first theme in the list is in use after a restart. If Oxygen (the default theme) happens to be on top of the list, things look ugly after a restart. The folder windows are black etc.

3. Often when I log in, I get thrown out of X and have to log in again. Not a serious problem, but still....

4. When I installed KDEmod I also got Kopete. I really like it, but it's very unstable for me. I only use it to chat with MSN/WLM-contacts. That worked perfectly with the Kopete that came with Kubuntu 9.04, but not with the KDEmod Kopete. I don't receive all the messages my contacts write to me, and they don't receive all the messages I write to them. What could be wrong? Some way to fix this?

I really love Arch and KDEmod, so I don't want to go back to using Kubuntu. I might have to if I can't solve some of these problems, so please help me! Thank you! smile

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

Hmm.

Try this.. make an arbitrary new test user (sudo adduser), log in to kde using that test user, change your settings to how you want them, log out and back in.. see if you have the same problems as before. Obviously, you can userdel testUserName and kill its folder in /home when finished.

If this works properly and gets rid of any of your problems, then you can move these folders (note the *s) in your normal account to a backup folder and 'start fresh' (note that some of them are overkill to move, but it couldn't hurt):

~/.local
~/.kde*
~/.qt*
~/.config*
~/.gnome*
~/.gtk*

If your icon is still missing when you do this, please show us

pacman -Q | grep kdemod
pacman -Q | grep icon

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

Damn =/ everything seems in proper order to me..

IIRC, the icon used to be located at /usr/share/icons/oxygen/scalable/places/start-here-branding.svg ... does that exist? If not, try copying one of the other svg's over it, switch to a different arbitrary icon theme, then switch back, and see if it changes? I'm not sure if it's still in the same place; some point in Unstable had it change to another one I haven't bothered to find (the K is fine).

If nobody else has any ideas or you dont otherwise figure it out, you can try a last resort of updating to kdemod "unstable", which has the KDE 4.3 Beta 1 in it right now..

The getting kicked out of kde seems to be a crashing of plasma or something, possibly related to the video drivers. pacman -Q | grep nvidia ? Not that I can probably help there besides using the newest ones. The same goes for the weird black stuff you mentioned. Would you happen to know what driver version you were using on kubuntu, as well?

Above other kdemod mirrors in /etc/pacman.conf, copy one of your other entries but change the dir name to

[kdemod-unstable]

The only 'showstopper' to this point I've seen is the i686 packages (doesn't happen to x64) seem to be missing /etc/rc.d/kdm, which can be avoided probably by making a backup of your current /etc/rc.d/kdm, getting it from somewhere else, or just starting kdm via 'sudo kdm' from cmd line. I think a couple packages may also need to be forced with the -f flag temporarily.

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

The icon exists. I've tried to switch to another icon theme and back, but still the same missing icon.

I got all these problems after updating KDE, so I don't think it's nvidia related. The "Black folder" plasma issue seems to be fine now. Don't know what I did, but my oxygen theme is working properly now. But now Oxygen is always selected after I restart X. Even if it's supposed to be something else. Strange.

I think I got all these problems except from the Kopete problem a couple of days ago with an update. :\

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

Hm. Likely from 4.2.2 I take it. If you still have them in your cache (ls /var/cache/pacman/pkg | grep kdemod | grep 4.2.2), you can downgrade perhaps by.. (untested)

pacman -U `ls /var/cache/pacman/pkg | grep kdemod | grep 4.2.2`

else you can probably find them on an outdated mirror or at the ARM repo, which we'll put down as a last resort.

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

Probably. I don't have them in my cache, because I reinstalled Arch just after the release of KDE 4.2.3.

But why am I the only one having these problems if 4.2.3 is to blame?

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

Reinstall the packages in question. I have sometimes experienced not all the files were unpacked and installed and a simple reinstall got the job done.

Make sure to download them again if you still have it in cache.

@qweac
I'm afraid you're not the only one having those problems. Unfortunately I don't know how to help.

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

Have you tried installing the vanilla kde from the arch repo's? Not the best solution, but it will let you know if the problem is kdemod specific

I tried that (I have the same problem) and it didn't work for me.

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

Hi! Today I nuked my KDE arch (I removed everything KDE related even qt) installation and installed KDEmod (unstable) and finally got my icons back.

Re: Some KDEmod problems...

I had this problem once with disappearing icons and such... and found that when I purged everything like you did, and reinstalled, everything looked appropriate.  Frustrating though, as you have to redo all of your settings.
