Awesome 3.3 ignores gnome-panel

I use awesome with Gnome, and until the 3.3 update I was able to use the gnome panel easily with it. With the recent update it seems that there's no way to focus the panel, and it is always covered up by open windows, meaning that I will have to switch to an empty tag if I want to do something with the panel. I cannot see my current keyboard layout, either. How can I tell awesome to make some room at the bottom of the screen for the panel? Please help.

Re: Awesome 3.3 ignores gnome-panel

I noticed that if I kill gnome-panel manually, upon its automatic restart, awesome will take account of its existence and make room for it... Maybe I should add a kill script into the gnome autostart sequence...
