tty grey font after starting X

Hi, I'm new to Arch, so... I'm sorry in advance for some lame questions)

I installed gnome recently, and i really liked it!
the problem is that when I start my X server (with startx smile ) and the gnome DE appears, when I want to switch back to my ttyX terminals the font color is grey... deep grey... so I barelly see what's written there...
has someone had, or has such a problem... please suggest me smth...

Thanks is advance)

Re: tty grey font after starting X

Welcome!

That sounds strange to me.  Does it affect all the characters, including the ones that were formerly a different color?

One hackish thing you might try is to set your PS1 variable to turn the color to white... try typing

export PS1="$PS1\[\e[;1m\]"

in the console after you exit the X session and see if the colors change when you type a command.  (Not a permanent fix, just narrowing down the possibilities.)

Re: tty grey font after starting X

ok, i tried that and the whole text went black... like the background... so now I really don't see a thing))

and... sorry, but PS1 variable sets the prompt info, when in the console, or it's just me?
what this has to do with console font, or color pallete?

Re: tty grey font after starting X

The \[\e[;1m\] part is just a control sequence that tells the console to switch colors.  It's not important that it be in the PS1 variable, just that it gets sent to the console -- using PS1 is just a convenient way to do that.

I'm not sure why it should be black for you.  But you could try removing the ;1 part which should turn the color back to the correct foreground color (usually light grey):

export PS1="$PS1\[\e[m\]"

Re: tty grey font after starting X

Beats me.  X shouldn't be messing with your console colors in the first place, so... maybe it's a different problem.

Does it change the color for the whole console?  Does it happen for all the consoles, or just the one you started X from?

Re: tty grey font after starting X

it's affecting all consoles... maybe it's a gnome problem, later i'll try to install KDE, or xfce and see if this problem is still present...
thx a lot )

Re: tty grey font after starting X

I think what dvdriper was trying to say is that at every switch from VT to X and backward the text gets dimmer, until it's not visible at all.
I've had the same problem on a NetBSD box, but I thought it was related to the OS. It seems to be some bug in Xorg.
Hasn't anyone else experienced that?

Oh, and I have an ATI Radeon X300. God, how I hate this video chip.
