Re: laptop brightness in gnome

In your session startup, run

xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL legacy

good luck, and before you run in startup, test it in a terminal
It might not solve the problem, but it solved many of my own backlight problems.

Re: laptop brightness in gnome

I remember I had this problem too, and I solved it, but I use KDE now so I cant remember!  Try adding the brightness applet to the taskbar.  I've heard that worked for some people.  There are also brightness settings in the display options aren't there?

Re: laptop brightness in gnome

You don't happen to have enabled the "dim screen when inactive" option gnome-power-manager?

Re: laptop brightness in gnome

I had the same issue, but my memory fails me too, its one of these for sure:
1) use xscreensaver instead of gnome-screensaver, or none at all
2) play around with xset settings in terminal
3) use gconf-editor and look for some keys relating to gnome-power-manager and screensaver, switch em around
