psychedelic kde display [solved]

I've just set up a new system, at home I had it using a Samsung 2333 wide display (it's going on another machine, but it was available while setting up).  Now I have it using a Hanns-g HC-194D, a 19" standard LCD display.  All X functions seemed to work fine on the old monitor.  When I am at the command line, everything works fine with this monitor.  But when i go into X, I get this psychedelic display that reminds me of "The Starry Night" by Van Gogh.  I'm running without an xorg.conf file; I tried making one with Xorg -configure and then all I got was a blank screen.
This is an analog or digital monitor, I've tried both ways with no change.  Graphics card is an Asus EAH4350 (ATI RADEON HD4350 GPU )

I don't recognize this problem and would appreciate any leads.

Answer:  It was just a driver problem.  I installed the xf86-video-ati driver, and everything is working properly.  Not sure why it worked with the other monitor without this driver.
