Minimal Live CD configuration

Hi,

I'm developing my own backup scripts. Currently there are only plans on paper, they describe the backup part. As I'm using M$ Windows as primary OS on the workstation and I don't want to get troubles with locked files, the backup should do its job within a live disc.

So the simple question is: What is the minimal configuration for a live CD? I don't know if I should use archiso or larch. Which will be easier to create a minimal live cd from?
The only requirements: support for mounting external USB disks (NTFS formatted) and a current version of PHP as the backup scripts will be written in PHP. No Xorg or other kiddies stuff, just stage 3.
Which packages can be removed from the default arch installation (base packages) for this task?

Thanks for your hints!

Re: Minimal Live CD configuration

Maybe archiso is quicker, but larch is well-documented, both of them works well.
