Well I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on configuring my rig with a 4870X2 to get all of the desktop effects. I've never installed the proprietary driver before, so I'm not sure if I did it right......so I just tested with the open-source xf86-video-ati.
I've installed all of the dependencies for ATI's driver using yaourt, however I am at the point where I need to get a xorg.conf file using:
Xorg -configure
and I get a message stating:
Fata server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting.
I am able to run Xorg -confiugre with the xf86-video-radeonhd driver, however it doesn't start X successfully when testing. I'm looking into the settings further for this driver, as my resolution isn't detected correctly without a xorg.conf file (1920x1080.)
What driver will I require for running all of the desktop effects available (with compositing)?
Thanks in advance.

Ok here's a little update:
I've tried reinstalling the packages required for the proprietary driver and I still have no luck running Xorg -configure. I can't run
aticonfig --initial
until I have a valid /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, as it will give a warning message.
xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-radeonhd both work with limited functionality in KDE, however neither supports compositing and the radeonhd driver doesn't seem to allow my res in KDE.

For my HD4870 I simply copied the "minimal working example" from the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Configuration and went on from there. You might have to delete the line with the BusID but I'm not sure about that.
