Hi Folks,
I'm using Firefox 3.5 from extra and it is so damn slow under KDE 4.2.4, compositing enabled (Intel GFX, Driver version xf86-video-intel 2.8.0 from AUR, KMS on, Kernel 2.6.30).
Furthermore I installed "extra/gtk-qt-engine 1.1-1" to get a good integration into the look&feel of KDE.
The application itself has a normal performance, but the menus are very laggy.
In addition to gtk-qt-engine I've tried "community/gtk-kde4", but that seemed to make things even worse
I think that those gtk-qt engines are to blame, but I don't know where to search for issues/problems.
Another thing is: If I say "Use my KDE style/fonts in GTK Applications" in KDE system settings dialog, Firefox looks as follows
Whats happening here?
Is there any known trick, to get a decent performance in Firefox 3.5 under KDE 4.2?
Best regards,
mefiX

Instead of using gtk-qt-engine you'd better install gtk-chtheme to change the GTK theme for a more KDE4 like. For example gtk-kde42-oxygen-theme in AUR.

Thanks for this hint.
There're even more themes that seem to fit:
- oxygen-molecule-theme
- gtk-kde42-oxygen-theme
- gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme
But, unfortunately I figured out that the menus of Firefox are also very laggy without any gtk-qt-engine stuff turned on!

I just use QTCURVE as a theme, it has a native KDE3, KDE4 and GTK theme giving a constant look all around plus it is better looking then oxygen imho (especially when set to AQUA).
stefan ~ $ pacman -Ss qtcurve
extra/qtcurve-gtk2 0.66.0-1 (qtcurve)

extra/qtcurve-kde3 0.66.0-1 (qtcurve)

about performance, did you disable the Ipv6 stuff in about:config? when i used FF i noticed ipv6 dns was on by default and really slowing it down. I since switched to Opera10 which is *way* faster and has a native QT4 build instead of FF's GTK.
stefan ~ $ yaourt -Ss opera-snapshot
archlinuxfr/opera-snapshot 4502-1 [installed]

Hi,
thanks for your hint about IPv6 in about:config, i will try that later, when I'm @home.
I've already tested Opera and I confirm that it's way faster than FF.
But imho it's also way more ugly than FF
I applied several themes to it, but what keeps ugly is the menu. I thought it's a native QT4 application, so why is its integration into KDE4 so bad?
Currently it looks like the following:
The theme is "opera oxygen project"
As one can see, the menu has correct layout, but crappy colors and fonts.

well i use opera10 beta2 from archlinux.fr and use the default opera theme (not the one called qt4 native), it doesn't 100% integrate into kde oxygen or qtcurve that way but I think it looks pretty cool, and the default theme is way more appealing to me then the default FF theme is. The default theme is this one:
http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/i/z5/rv/2009 … _turbo.jpg
but then appearance is very personal. I just love the fact it is so much faster then FF and has lots more features ootb (in a smaller download) and with the opera-link feature syncing my speedial and favourites and Fanboys addblock.ini I really don't miss anything from FF anymore.
i think a lot of "home-made-themes" haven't been updated to opera10 yet and with oper10 being relatively new there are not a lot of good themers for it either.

Besides the eye-candy stuff my actual problem is still there.
Firefox is damn slow under kde 4.3 and i don't know whats going on.
Under GNOME, everything works as expected, FF is fast.
I turned off IPv6 features, no change.
Any further tips?

I seem to have the exact same problem recently. Not sure what caused it. It wasn't like this when I first updated to Firefox 3.5. Opening new tabs on javascript heavy sites also seem to lag the whole app.
Just a couple of things you might wanna try. Rename firefox and KDE profile to start anew(without firefox extensions etc.) . Disable compositing in Xorg.

Ahh managed to solved it. It seems to be a "lag" problem with the flashgot extension possibly after updating. 1 more reason not to update frequently I guess.
