Cannot open images in openbox

hai guys,
got a really weird problem atm. i can't open any images with an image viewer (gpicview, mirage, etc ... ). gimp works fine. there's always the same error, that the filetype is wrong or that it's impossible to detect the file's format! oO
the default image viewer starts but display only a X or a blank file -.-

did anyone already experienced this error?

What types of images? Try GIF, PNG, JPG.

Can a simple viewer like feh display them? Try running Imagemagick operations on them, too.

tested any kind of image type. none of them worked. feh does, it also manages my openbox wallpaper.
imagemagick operations didn't do the trick

sounds like some lib is broken to me . I'd try to reinstall libpng/libjpeg.
