[Regression] KDE4 does not load anymore after recent kernel update.

Hi,
I have updated my system to latest packages and now KDE4 does not load. i get a Blank Screen.

I can't reach virtual terminals(I tried ALT+F1 to F11, but no response)
Control + ALT + BACKSPACE does not work.
even magic SysRq key(Alt+SysRq+REISUB) has no effect.

So I had to hard reset my machine. somehow I managed to get logs.

The only warnings are that freetype(the package is called freetype2) is not installed and that acpi is not running. Maybe installing freetype and starting the ACPI service will resolve your problem. You could also try one of the opensource NVIDIA drivers(nv or nouveau), if X starts with one of these, there must be a oblem with the NVIDIA driver.

the thing is Connections to X server are timed out. somehow X server is not accepting any connection.

No, Its not fixed. I still have the problem.
if you want to check if its a nvidia problem or not, then change driver from "nvidia" to "vesa" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf 

if GUI appears then, nvidia binary driver is the culprit. else its something else.

I am not been able to watch videos because of this I have been daily updating my system but same problem.

Hi,
i've just tried to use vesa driver, and it works... So the problem come from nvidia drivers.
As you, i don't want to loose composite acceleration and performances, so i'm still looking for a divine solution to get the nvidia drivers working tongue

I have a GeForce 8600M and use Gnome.  My xorg is up-to-date but I am using the 180.51 driver.  It is working fine.  All ohers included the beta version produce various bugs.

Hi,
I Did try it to manually download version 180.51 from Arch Rollback Machine. removed the current packages by

pacman -Rd


then when I tried to install, pacman gave me a error

it was something like

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
::  requires kernel26>2.6.30

I have a fully Updated install, using pacman -Syu

I installed the packages with pacman -Ud option to skip dependency checks. it installed without any errors but still does not work :-(

I have same video card on 32bit kdemod 4.3 and had same /var/log xorg message re freetype missing and can't find acpi after latest nvidia and xorg updates. But I only lost 3D desktop. I installed acpid and commented out the freetype line and whatever other module couldn't be loaded(?xtrap) in xorg.conf. And I have Server Option "AutoAddDevices" as ''false"  in xorg.conf so my mouse and keybd would work. Without that Option the screen goes black with a 'kbd axis' error message.Those steps got 3D again and no more var/log xorg errors.  pacman  will confirm you have freetype2 and that  the freetype pkg doesn't exist.
  So stick with the latest if you can and make changes according to the /var/log xorg log files. Good luck.
