Basically, when I put a DVD in my DVD-r drive, Gnome auto mounts it to /media/NAME_OF_DVD automatically. I'd like to have it auto mounted to /media/dvd instead but have no idea where this setting is stored. Anyone?

I'm not sure but you can probably change this behaviour with policykit. Or you could just use the /dev/ name, most likely /dev/sr0

You are right... it is /dev/sr0 and the major problem I'm having is assigning a fixed mount location for wine to use. I basically need to point a drive letter to the dvdrom in winecfg but it always changes based on the name of the media. I need to force it to mount /dev/sr0 to /media/dvd

With
/dev/sr0 /media/dvd udf,iso9660 ro,user,noauto,iocharset=utf8,unhide 0 0
is it OK ?
(of course, you must have /media/dvd already created)

No, no. replace /dev/dvd with /dev/sr0. But, you should prefer the line I proposed, it works.

if you leave the mount operation to HAL, it works fine ..... or not ?!?!?
