I installed virtualbox from the .bin file on the virtualbox site.
After the last kernel update, the vbox kernel module broke, so I reinstalled. This didn't fix it, so I got rid of the vbox files in opt, and reinstalled. I did save the old files.
Now, usb doesn't work. If i try to mount devices, I can see them in the menu, but they are greyed out.

Have you done the necessary changes to your /etc/fstab? According to this wiki article: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vir … st_machine

I did that a long time ago.
It worked until this recent event described in the 1st post. It may also be something with the new kernel.

how do you rebuild the kernel module if you installed from the vbox site?
vbox_build_module doesn't work
or what is the arch equivalent of
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv start
which a vbox error told me to run

I'm pretty sure vboxdrv is a kernel module. Try adding it to MODULES() in rc.conf or modprobe it.

I've got an up to date system, and this is still broken, and no one has been able to fix it.

Have you got the latest virtualbox_bin from AUR? It came out in the last couple of days. I have never had to edit fstab to get usb working but I do have the guest additions installed. I'm using kernel 2.6.30.

Just adding to the works fine for me list ;-) I have virtualbox_bin 3.0.6 from archlinux.fr and kernel 2.6.30 installed and have no problems accessing usb devices from my Windows XP guest. Silly question but if you have the guest additions installed then do you have USB enabled in the settings for your virtual machine(s)?

usb is enabled in the VMs. It worked before and I didn't change those settings.
I took the usbfs thing out of fstab and I'll try that when I can reboot.
I have the lastest Vbox. Installed that today. My system is completely up to date.

The only other thing I can think of is when you say it works as root but not as a normal user. Which groups is the user a member of?
