Re: gnome 2.28

With Arch nothing is default ;-)

If you ask will it be default within gnome or gnome-extra group - well it's up to maintainers to decide...

Re: gnome 2.28

You don't need the packages compiled with pulseaudio. Just install pulseaudio, its in the repos.

Or just read the Pulseaudio section of the wiki.

That wasn't quite correct for 2.26. I don't know if the situation has changed with 2.28 or not.

Gnome is pulse audio compatible by default, but that makes dependant on pulse, so arch removes the ties. So if you want pulse with the nice gnome interfaces you need to recompile a couple of gnome things. Somebody (that's better at mantaining packages in the AUR than me, I usually forget about it) needs to make gnome-media-pulse and such that provide/conflicts with  regular gnome-media. I don't disagree with arch on this.

I have a couple of questions too though:

1) Will we get gnome-zeitgeist and gnome-activity-journal

2) Will we get gnome-shell (I'm just curious, I don't think I'll be really using it)

When you use Pulse, you should use their tools, such as pavucontrol, instead of Gnome's pretty ugly sliders. I'm running 2.26 with Pulse, and I've never rebuilt anything except mpd to use it.

In the end, what you want are sounds for your apps. A modified .asoundrc which defaults to pulse is sufficient for that. I believe rebuilding those three packages is for gnome sounds to play, which while useful can be done just as well with the modified .asoundrc, AFAIK.

In another machine I've installed gnome-unstable (2.28). Pulse works just fine here as well.

* pulseaudio is default option for gnome 2.28, because it replaces depreciated ESD sound mixer. And I don't see any reason to make it as optional package in archs. Pulseaudio is the core element of gnome sound system, not an optional feature.
* empathy is default IM for gnome and i think it will be included in gnome-extra metapackage.

Epiphany uses WebKit. Empathy is now the default IM app for the Gnome Project (not for Arch users, you know)

If Gnome devs says they are a small bug fixes...

Re: gnome 2.28

Yep but they clearly state it's the default im now and it is replacing pidgin in it place...

Now I know that it is distro specific what packages are going to be "default" in gnome, deluge is offered by opensuse instead of transmission ie. But it's up to arch dev's to include empathy or pidgin in gnome or gnome-extra or neither...

KISS remember, people should choose for themself which im will they use...

Re: gnome 2.28

it can't be included in gnome-extra because empathy is in community and this will break the repo rule, meaning that a group can't have packages in more than one repo.
i don't see any problem as long you can do pacman -S empathy smile

Re: gnome 2.28

What about splitting packages? There could be packages with pulseaudio and without pulseaudio. By the way, are you going to make package of gnome-shell and gnome-zeitgeist?

Re: gnome 2.28

Gnome-shell and zeitgeist aren't ready yet, and are mentioned as optional for GNOME 2.x. Until GNOME 3.x (when they will be included in the upstream group), they are OK on AUR.

As for the splitted packages: GNOME is splitted by default, upstream. The archlinux specific splitted packages are those packages that are created from a common source tarball (for example, mesa, libgl, ati-dri, intel-dri, are built from the same upstream tarball), not that they are built with different options.
