Something very fishy happening with CD mounting

I've got two HP systems (a d330 and a Vectra) each with two optical drives on the secondary IDE controller:
d330: DVDreader/CDwriter + DVDwriter
Vectra: DVDwriter + CDwriter
Both the systems are kept up to date with pacman -Syu, but the Vectra is about 6 days behind at present.

This problem seems very recent indeed:
I have 3 identical copies of some pristine data CDs which all refuse to mount in either of the d330 drives; other CDs work okay. The CDs were checked when written a few months back and all worked well (but they may have been written by another computer, can't 100% recall). Here's what dmesg says:

sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=0x00 driverbyte=0x08
sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : 0x5 [current]
sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] ASC=0x64 ASCQ=0x0
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 1371816
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 342954
sr 1:0:1:0: [sr1] Unhandled sense code
sr 1:0:1:0: [sr1] Result: hostbyte=0x00 driverbyte=0x08
sr 1:0:1:0: [sr1] Sense Key : 0x3 [current]
sr 1:0:1:0: [sr1] ASC=0x11 ASCQ=0x5
end_request: I/O error, dev sr1, sector 1371816
Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 342954

However, these CDs mount immediately without a problem in both of the Vectra drives. I really doubt that there's anything wrong with the CDs - the media are of mixed manufacture too.
Rebooting and shutdown don't change anything on the d330.
Could some very recent updates be to blame for the d330 being more choosy about which CDs it is prepared to mount? Here are the extra packages upgraded on the d330 relative to the Vectra:

I'm a bit worried about updating the Vectra in case the same problem occurs on it hmm
Any ideas, anyone, please?

Update: Just booted up the d330 with CrunchBang 9.04 and guess what ... the CDs mount fine straight away. So, it doesn't look like a hardware or CD fault; unfortunately seems like an Arch-specific problem!

Re: Something very fishy happening with CD mounting

Could be sdparm. Try

pacman -U <cachedir>/sdparm-1.03-2-<arch>.pkg.tar.gz

on  the d330 and see if that fixes the problem.

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

Thanks for that emminently sensible idea. Downgraded as suggested, but no luck I'm afraid - exactly the same problem is evident. sad

Re: Something very fishy happening with CD mounting

Okay, so I fully upgraded the Vectra today and the CDs continue to mount fine on it, so looks like Arch itself is exonerated. Then, I made an ISO from the CD on the Vectra and wrote it to a fresh load of CDs on the d330. The newly written CDs all mount fine on both machines, so I'm not going to fret any more about it.

But it's weird how CrunchBang 9.04 could mount the old lot of CDs on the d330, but not Arch.
Not solved, but bypassed! hmm

Just per chance are you using 64bit Arch?

Re: Something very fishy happening with CD mounting

I have the same behavior with Creative DVD-ROM, hal recognize it as DVD6240E. Long time to mount and practically the same error messages:
sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] ASC=0x11 ASCQ=0x0
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 9180152
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 2295038
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 2295039
sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] Unhandled sense code
sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=0x00 driverbyte=0x08
sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] Sense Key : 0x3 [current]
Info fld=0x2304fe
sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] ASC=0x11 ASCQ=0x0
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 9180152
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 2295038
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 2295039

It can mount DVD disk finallly, but it takes 3-5 minutes or even more. I have tried to find something in internet without luck.
