I'm not sure I understand you, can you explain a little? Ubuntu doesn't use Xorg?  9.10 does, I checked. And yes Arch has no X by default you have to install it. Refer to the Beginner's Guide.

In theory you don't "need" one in Arch now, the autodetection should handle things automagically, for the most part...if it doesn't then you can cook up an Xorg.conf (I do).

I read something or other on UF about Ubuntu not even using Xorg.conf at all-and controlling X via HAL....which sounds like a complete PITA...although it does sound like something the *buntu folks would do to complicate users lives.

I think Ubuntu just uses the X.Org no-xorg.conf autodetection...

Re: Xorg?

Auto-detction doesn't work well for my nvidia card in arch for some reason, however ubuntu karmic is detecting it well. Weird. Anyway I like having a xorg.conf file around to tweak stuffs directly and enable/disable features I do not want.

That is what I thought-

The topic came up, as someone having problems with X not using native resolution, and the obvious answer is/was to make an Xorg.conf and hard set the resolution...someone claimed that Ubuntu no longer even uses xorg.conf, and you could only hard set the resolutions or modify X behavior by mucking about with HAL.

3rd hand gossip I know-but it seemed bizzarro.  I thought the claimant is/was full of crap-but I don't have a recent frisbee of *buntu to find out around Mi Casa.

I saw the same issue. I have a 1600x1200 screen and without xorg.conf, it has a max res of about 1200X1280. So I had to put my xorg in there again. I am glad I had only renamed it and not deleted it smile

I didn't check the other things. since getting a good screen res is important to me. So I might still have a few things in my xorg.conf which may not be needed. But, who cares as long as everything works.
