Hanging/delay with mounted partitions when browsing /media

I randomly mount my laptop via bash command and also regularly have my Mythbox mounted via NFS, but sometimes if I have for example rebooted the Mythbox server without unmounting it first from my box (forgot to or what have you), if I then cd to /media, do a ls, it hangs a good while before displaying anything (same with a df). Is there a way around this? Like to have it check if the mount point is mounted or if the host is down with a faster timeout or something?
