For some reason KDE doesn't start nm-applet with the rest of the programs I tell it to autostart. I start with
nm-applet --sm-disable
No big deal right, let me just open up a terminal and start it there. Great! There it is. Connected to my wireless network and everything! Now, let's just close this terminal... OH! nm-applet stopped running.
When I start nm-applet in a terminal like so:
nm-applet --sm-disable &
It _will_ not stay running after I close the terminal. What the hell?
I suppose a solution to either of my issues would be great.

Have you tried one of the GUI suggestions from the wiki for KDE?

Can this be a problem with your shell perhaps? I've had the same issue with my terminals using zsh. The shell killed all it's children when exiting, I had to unset this behaviour by adding "setopt nohup" in .zshrc.

So my workaround was to start nm-applet with the KDE app launch thingy (alt+f2)
