I didn't install gdm or kdm, just write
exec startxfce4
in "/root/.xinitrc", and use
startx
to start xfce4. But after this command was executed, the screen was alway black, can't see the X window until I use
Ctrl+Alt+Fn
to switch to ttyn and then switch back to tty7.
My fellow also encountered this problem in Ubuntu several days ago, and still can't solve it.
Seems the problem of Xorg?

For starters, you really shouldn't be launching X as root. Create an .xinitrc in your users home directory and `startx` as your user, not root.
As for the issue of needing to swap to a TTY and back, well I'm not sure. See if the problem persists when launching via user and go from there.
